A look at Article 46 Sales and Use Tax referendum

Published

on

Cleveland County, NC — Below is an excerpt from the document on the Cleveland County website, as well as in full below:

Cleveland County residents will have the opportunity to vote for or against a Sales and Use Tax referendum on the Nov. 8 Election ballot. If passed, the Cleveland County sales tax would change from 6.75 percent to 7 percent. This would equate to an additional $0.25 cents on a $100 purchase.
The passing of this referendum would create approximately $3 million per year in additional revenue which will be used specifically for Cleveland County Schools’ capital projects.

This is the third time the county has tried to foist this sales tax upon the people. Keep in mind, the school administration has already committed to spending quite freely for the new auditoriums at Crest and Burns High Schools. Also, work has been done at Kings Mountain, but now, another $3M per year for the school to spend recklessly? I would vote NO! It was announced in May of this year, that Cleveland County Schools had received Cleveland County Schools: $7.8 million for the two auditoriums.

Superintendent Dr. Stephen Fisher of Cleveland County Schools
“The addition of these auditoriums will have an obvious impact on the students at Burns and Crest high schools through increased academic course offerings and improved extracurricular opportunities. However, the impact is not limited to these schools. The auditoriums will also be used by the adjacent middle schools to each high school. Furthermore, the auditoriums will be useful and have a tremendous impact on our community. The increased opportunity for partnership and collaboration will enhance the opportunities for our students and communities.
“The Cleveland County Board of Education and Cleveland County Schools appreciates the support demonstrated through the awarding of this grant request. These auditorium projects will positively impact our schools and community now and for years to come.”

Now, combine that with this $3M tax windfall suggested and brought to bear by the county commissioners via the County Manager and Assistant, plus a nifty $400K from the NC Speaker of the House Tim Moore…and you need not tempt them to waste more.

For smart shopping, it might be wise to give them (CSS) a couple of Gift Cards as a trial run. One from the M&M company and one from Walmart!
